Sachin Jain: Can we talk about all the bad career advice that gets dispensed?

Sachin Jain, President and CEO of the

“Can we talk about all the bad career advice that gets dispensed? There’s so much of it. Why is advice so often wrong?

1) Projection: Many advice-givers dispense advice knowingly or unknowingly project their own past (or current) situation onto another person. While some experiences are relevant—they may not be germane to the particular situation at hand. And people are often bad listeners and fail to understand the advice-seeker’s situation (I’ve been guilty of this often).

2) Values: People have different values. Those values don’t get discussed explicitly. So advice is often given assuming that the advice-giver and advice-seeker have shared values—when in fact people have different hierarchy of values. Security, pride, power, financial success. When the compass isn’t clear, the advice people receive can often be misaligned.

3) Intergenerational Change: Advice is often given from members of one generation to members of another. Advice is often dispensed without regard to changing generational context.

4) Self-interest: Advice-givers often have hidden agendas that aren’t clear. They may have non-transparent self-interest in the outcome.

What is some bad advice you’ve received? What was the underlying reason for it?”
