Bernard A. Fox: Dr. Steven A. Rosenberg had an almost magical power
Bernard A. Fox, Co-Founder and CEO of UbiVac, shared on LinkedIn:
“It is a walk down memory lane to read Dr. Nick Restifo’s prose.
I remember meeting the amazing Prof. Restifo when he joined the Rosenberg lab to work with Jim Mule’, and was one row over from the hood Jeffrey S. Weber and I shared. It was an amazing era with Jim Yang, Suzanne Topalian, Mike Lotze, Raj Puri, and many others.
In 1988 the Rosenberg lab had already completed the groundwork to administer genetically engineered T cells to patients with cancer. However, administration activities and a lawsuit delayed treating the first patient until 1989.
Dr. Steven A. Rosenberg had an almost magical power. He perceived the immune system’s potential to destroy cancer and had insights of how to harness that power to do something no one else had done. Our observation of patients, in rooms 100 feet away from the lab, responding to these therapies, drove excitement, passion, and energy to work very long hours in pursuit of better treatments, and in some cases the complete regression of cancer.
The vision and passion SAR induced remains active in many who passed thru his lab. Nick, thanks for the memories.”
