“The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is proud to have supported many life-changing projects over the years, including the groundbreaking Data for the Common Good.
Formerly known as the Pediatric Cancer Data Commons, this initiative houses the world’s largest set of harmonized clinical data for pediatric cancer research, giving researchers easy access to diverse data.
In 2019, St. Baldrick’s awarded foundational funding to help realize the vision of this comprehensive data commons for all pediatric cancers.
Today, the Data for the Common Good, at the University of Chicago, has created an international sharing platform that enhances data access for studying various pediatric cancers, improving diagnosis and treatment for kids with cancer.
“Until recently, there weren’t many new drugs to treat pediatric cancers, but the way we use the drugs has changed dramatically. The ability to stratify patients based on genetic testing has also changed, allowing patients to receive the most appropriate treatment for their cancer.
Further, new sensitive approaches to detecting residual tumor cells have made disease surveillance during and after treatment much more effective.” – Samuel Volchenboum, MD, PhD, MS, UChicago.
