Helen Rowntree: Could you be Blood Cancer UK’s next Chair of our board of trustees?

“Could you be Blood Cancer UK’s next Chair of our board of trustees?
We’re excited, but also a little daunted to be embarking on the process to find the new Chair of our talented, committed board, including Amir Sethu (FCA), Jules Hillier, Tim Gillbanks, Louise Lai, Jasmine Handford, Fraser Wilson and others not on LinkedIn
Our current Chair, John Ormerod, has been an exceptional leader of the organisation and advocate for people with blood cancer. Working closely with our former CEO Gemma Peters he has overseen a thorough transformation of Blood Cancer UK, and a renewed commitment to get to the day when no lives are lost from blood cancer. This was set out in the strategy we published last year.
These are big shoes to fill. But we know that there is someone out there who will be right for the role and our very special organisation. That person will:
• Have very significant experience in their chosen field and will have now reached a point in their career where they want to apply that experience to the leadership of an exceptional organisation and our board of trustees
• Be dedicated to our mission to bring forward the day when no one dies as a result of their blood cancer diagnosis or treatment. Whether or not you have a personal connection to leukaemia, lymphoma or myeloma, you’ll be motivated to work on behalf of everyone living with blood cancer, the fifth most common cancer in the UK
• Be a leader with strong values and a keen sense of ambition for the organisation. We’ve made huge progress over the last five years and we want to go even further, so that we can fund more research, reach more people affected by blood cancer and accelerate progress towards our goal.
Of course, as CEO I am particularly invested in making sure that we find the right Chair of trustees. A successful relationship between a charity’s Chair and CEO is important in any organisation. In my mind, successful means plenty of challenge as well as support and guidance.
But more importantly, this is a role where your leadership, and the experience you bring, could make a difference to everybody impacted by blood cancer across the UK. And will mean many thousands more people living longer and surviving after diagnosis, every year.
