“Reflecting on my Thanksgiving reading, Dr. Amy Edmondson’s book Right Kind of Wrong is a MUST READ for any healthcare leader.

Here’s just one example of why: Chapter 4, about the perfect storm – complex failures that unfold over decades.

As I read through my Clinician Wellbeing lens, it doesn’t take long to recognize the superficial narrative on what’s behind the complex failure that is burnout in medicine, e.g., limited access to mental health, poor self-care, etc.

‘But as before,’ Edmondson writes, about complex failures, ‘look more closely and you will see some of the usual culprits defining complex failure: multiple causes in a reasonably familiar setting, with its false sense of security; missed signals; and interactive complexity in a shifting business environment….This multiplicity of factors also means you have many levers with which to interrupt the otherwise inexorable flow toward failure. It means that any one of us can become a complex-failure preventer….The silver lining in every perfect storm is this: each complex failure contains multiple opportunities for prevention.’
