“Growing up, summers spent in Zimbabwe, Zambia, Botswana and South Africa led Nickhill Bhakta to think he wanted to be an adult infectious disease specialist focused on global health. A very different speciality than what his father did as a pediatric oncologist. However, a randomly assigned internship in pediatric oncology during his third year of medical school changed the course of his career and sparked an existential crisis: how to practice both global health and pediatric oncology.
Years later, Bhakta found himself at St. Jude where he could realize the dream of uniting global health and pediatric oncology. He now leads the Sub-Saharan Africa regional program of St. Jude Global. This summer, St. Jude Global held its first regional meeting in Sub-Saharan Africa with 100 colleagues from 22 countries discussing how to tackle low pediatric cancer survival rates. An estimated 400,000 children around the world develop cancer each year, only half of whom are ever diagnosed. Most of these children live in low- and middle-income countries and will die from their disease due to lack of access to medical care.
