Julia Crawford: Supporting those affected by head and neck cancer

“July 27th is World Head and Neck Cancer Day. Head and Neck cancer is rare representing only 3-4% of all cancers diagnosed each year in Australia.

All treatments for head and neck cancer are tough and affect patients in ways that cannot be ‘hidden’ as most treatments will have an adverse impact on speech and swallowing.

To raise awareness on World Head and Neck Cancer Day yesterday, the Otolaryngology Head and Neck Nursing Group Inc hosted a day dedicated to teaching clinicians involved in the care of these complex patients.

It was fabulous to hang out with friends old (and new) including Marin, the Westmead ENT Nurse practitioner who organised and hosted the day (and whom I’ve known since I was a registrar at Westmead many a long year ago!) and Orsi Kokai from Oncology Recovery Services Inc who continues to passionately advocate for lymphoedema management in patients recovering from treatment.

And a huge shout out Puma Sundaresan, Jia (Jenny) Liu, Nadia Rosin, Julie McCrossin, Danielle Stone, Jus Rakhra and many more for contributing their time to supporting those affected by head and neck cancer and spread the message of early detection and prevention.”
