Laura Vater: It’s National Physician Suicide Awareness Day, and 4 years ago, I was at a very low point…
Laura Vater, GI oncologist at IU Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center, shared on X/Twitter:
”It’s National Physician Suicide Awareness Day, and 4 years ago, I was at a very low point. I had SI due to repeated 28-hour calls for many months in a row. The only thing that kept me going was the mental image of my daughter’s face (she was 3 at the time).
Physicians have one of the highest suicide rates of any profession, and more than half of us know a doctor who has either considered, attempted or died by suicide. While 60% of physicians report feelings of burnout, only 19% seek mental health support.
Anonymous support is available, and you are not alone. Text “SCRUBS” to 741741 or call the Physician Support Line (a free, confidential resource) at 1-888-409-0141.”
