“The month of July is earmarked for UV Safety Month, a perfect time to educate ourselves about the risks of ultraviolet (UV) rays and the importance of protection.

UV rays, a form of radiation from the sun, can cause significant damage to our skin and eyes. Prolonged exposure increases the risk of skin cancer, which is one of the most common cancers globally.

UV poses a serious cancer (squamous cell carcinoma) risk to persons living with albinism (PLWA), an autosomal recessive condition with very high stigmatization. This is why at Medicaid Cancer Foundation, we strive to include them in our programs, such as our annual walk away cancer, ensuring they use sunscreen and protective clothing. Similarly, we support the treatment of skin cancer in PLWA.

Protecting yourself is simple, wear sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, use protective clothing, hats, and sunglasses, and seek shade during peak sun hours(mornings to early evenings)

By taking these steps, you can significantly reduce your risk of skin cancer and other related cancers. Almost all types of Skin cancer can be treated if diagnosed early and before spread. I encourage you to stay sun-safe and always use protective measures.”
