Recently, Thomas R. Cox, Lab Head of Matrix and Metastasis Lab, shared a post on X about a recent paper by Adrienne Boire et al. titled “Why do patients with cancer die?“, published in Nature Reviews Cancer on June 19, 2024. .

“The phrase ‘metastasis accounts for 90% of cancer deaths’ is one of the most widely used in cancer research, yet it is overly simplistic, imprecise, and it is difficult to find any primary analysis supporting the statement.
In this Nature Reviews Cancer Roadmap, we review the current understanding of the immediate causes of mortality in cancer, including metastatic cancer. Read the paper here.
We go on to highlight the intricate interconnections between different aspects of patient deterioration, and conclude with recommendations for future studies of late-stage cancer that may shed new light on this important aspect of cancer biology and medicine.
