Jacqueline Hess: Highlights coming out of Swiss Biotech Day 2024

Jacqueline Hess, The Boardroom, shared on LinkedIn:

“There are always many highlights coming out of Swiss Biotech Day 2024 and this year was no exception. As usual so many impressive Swiss companies presented their ground breaking innovation that will hopefully be reaching patients soon.

The investor panels left me with many take aways including how virtually all Swiss biotechs as they grow are leveraging off of US investment, whereby most seem to be striving for initial or additional US capital market investment depending on their level of maturity.

In relation to this, some relevant points raised for 2024 were as follows:

  •  The biopharma market is expected to rebound further from some of the financing challenges it has seen in prior years.
  • The priority of large pharma is focused on bolt on deals over synergies.
  • Preference of big pharma is to acquire late stage (de-risked) assets and commercial assets, whereby starting in 2025 it is expected earlier stage pipeline assets may be of more interest again.

The panel on pharma partnering reinforced many of the above messages, also emphasising the importance of:

  • Data drives everything: staying long on science pays out.
  • Building relationships with pharma early is an important way to create confidence for whatever your company may do down the road.
  •  Connecting your scientific teams across the regions with pharma helps make sure your scientific approach is clearly understood.

I am so excited about the future of Swiss biotech, and in particular, how hard the industry is working to bring their innovation to all of us. As always, interested in your views including on how companies (such as in the biotech industry) can make the most out of the Swiss-US cross boarder corridor as a spring board for global growth.”
