Carmen Monge-Montero: I had the honor to be part of an important discussion hosted by OncoDaily and the AYA Working Group of the International Society of Paediatric Oncology – SIOP

“Exciting interview from AYA Awareness Week.

This AYA Awareness Week, I had the honor to be part of an important discussion hosted by OncoDaily and the AYA Working Group of the International Society of Paediatric Oncology – SIOP. I joined the conversation with Gabriela Villanueva from Argentina and Ruzanna Papyan from Armenia, and we talked about the challenges and achievements for Adolescents and Young Adults with cancer globally.

In our talk, I shared my own experiences of getting treatment in Costa Rica and living abroad for 10 years, which motivated me to work for better cancer care worldwide. We discussed several topics and projects, including:

The European Network of Youth Cancer Survivors (EU-CAYAS) project, Youth Cancer Europe , and our policy paper ‘Equitable, Diverse, and Inclusive Cancer Care in Europe’ presented last month at the European Parliament. Join us for the EDI training in cancer care in Cluj-Napoca this June. Applications are now open!

My YouTube Channel, Mano Sobrevivientes, where I interview cancer survivors from around the world (interviews are in English and Spanish).

Also, my new book, ‘Can-Can and the Adventure on Ming Island,’ is coming soon (June 4th). It’s a children’s story that also helps adults understand the full journey of cancer—not only the medical side but also the emotional and social effects of having cancer. Thank you Amsterdam Academy Press.

Thank you for this amazing interview! I’m looking forward to seeing more projects from our AYA community and collaborating with each other.

Extra info if you’ve read this far: I met Ruzanna at an event from the EU-CAYAS network, and we got stuck in an elevator for 2 hours! I couldn’t think of a better person to be stuck with. We chatted, laughed, and were even about to start watching a movie when we got rescued. You really do meet the best people in the weirdest situations.”
