Miguel Bronchud: Lancet Oncology Abstract on Calls to Reform Cancer MDTs in the English NHS

Miguel Bronchud, Co-Founder of Regenerative Medicine Solutions, shared a post on LinkedIn about an abstract by Talha Burki published in The Lancet Oncology:

“The issue I have recently published on ‘clinical cancer therapy guidelines’- and their updates and implications – is not a minor one.

See, for example, the current developments and discussions in the UK:

English NHS- Call for reform of cancer treatment decision making?

Talha Burki explains in The Lancet the announcement by several Professional Royal Colleges and associations of a radical departure from traditional practice in the English NHS (prior to further development and probably extension to others)…

Published September 4, 2025

A new briefing (included as a PDF doc) has called for radical reform to the Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) model in England. The briefing was published on Aug 28, 2025, and was endorsed by several professional bodies, including the Royal College of Radiologists and the Association of Cancer Physicians.

The briefing proposal argued that the established practice of scheduling MDT meetings for each patient with cancer is massively time-consuming, delays access to care, and neglects service improvement.

‘Given the limited cancer care workforce available to the NHS, we cannot afford the time to be spent in ‘unproductive MTDMs’.

So that ‘there is important detail that remains to be worked through…’.

Particularly I guess to better define what ‘unproductive’ truly means, and how to avoid a contradiction between ‘automatic allocation of cancer treatments’ to any particular ‘non complex patient’, and effective ‘personalized cancer care’ – considering that at a molecular and cellular level, and probably at individual/family levels, each cancer has been shown to be ‘a different and unique entity’. Not an easy task, but not impossible…

Due to the complexity of variables and the likelihood of professional and political controversial opinions – and other considerations – I prefer to avoid personal preference and directly reproduce and refer to the original English document as published so far (below).”
