One of the most upsetting things I hear from my medical school and residency classmates is that they increasingly fear for their personal safety in the delivery of clinical care.

The epidemic of workplace violence has been normalized in healthcare with active shooter training.

Almost everyone knows a physician or nurse who has been assaulted by a patient.

No one should EVER feel unsafe in the course of working in the healing professions.

No one.

That’s why I am taking to my Forbes column to propose that workplace violence towards healthcare workers be treated like hate crimes—with significantly harsher penalties.

And I’m also proposing that healthcare leaders take more action to ensure the safety of their staff.

Members of Congress and their professional staff—please take note and act now to implement legislation to create greater protections for people who deliver care—especially as more care is poised to be delivered in the home.

We can’t call them “heroes” one day and leave them sitting ducks the next…but that’s in fact what we are doing.
