Roupen Odabashian: Cancer in Young Adults

“Cancer in Young Adults

One of the most interesting and alarming phenomena I have witnessed is the higher incidence of cancer in young people. I have patients in their thirties who are being diagnosed with cancer, and it is quite concerning.
If you review the literature, many papers discuss the rising incidence of cancer among young individuals.
Heck, even two of my friends were recently diagnosed with cancer.

On one hand, this situation highlights how precious life is and underscores the importance of valuing time with loved ones, as you never know when it might end.

On the other hand, it prompts me to question why we are seeing this increase?

Although there is a genetic component to each case, I believe there are other significant factors at play, particularly our diet and the widespread presence of food factories across the US and Canada. There are Numerous documentaries on platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime that illustrate what animals are fed.

While I don’t think consuming animal products is inherently unhealthy, I am concerned about the excessive antibiotics and hormones animals are fed to promote growth, which are then ingested by humans. For example, chickens are fed to the degree that their breast is so heavy that they can’t stand on their feet.

Moreover, the chemicals and preservatives in what we consider healthy snacks might also be contributing to this trend.

The issue is that these preservatives are usually studied individually, making it challenging to conduct studies on the combined effects of preservatives, chemicals, and additives in our food.

Many times I look at the ingredients of snacks and different food and I can’t understand half of it.

I am eager to hear everyone’s thoughts on this topic as well.”
