Arif Kamal: One of the most beautiful pieces about the need for palliative care

“One of the most beautiful pieces about the need for palliative care was written by my colleagues Kavitha Ramchandran MD and the soon-to-be retiring (and maven in the field) Jamie Von Roenn back in 2013.

Titled ‘Palliative Care Always’ in the journal Oncology, they expanded upon the critical need for palliative care to be seen as an ‘and/with’ instead of ‘either/or’, walking alongside cancer-directed treatments.

More recently, several studies including two pivotal clinical trials presented at the recent American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) annual meeting highlight the urgency of now, to make palliative care – the standard of care.

Appreciate the coverage of ABC News and Lindsey Ulin in speaking with me and my good friend Anthony Back about the need for – what Kavitha and Jamie said over a decade ago – routine integration of palliative care into advanced cancer care.”
