Jeff White: When the cancer communicator becomes the cancer patient.

Jeff White, Director of PR and Strategic Communications at the American Society for Radiation Oncology, recently tweeted:

“When the cancer communicator becomes the cancer patient. A quick thread.

My summer didn’t go as planned & I’ve been quiet on X. I want my ASTRO pals to know what’s up as we all know there is no shame in a cancer diagnosis.

A suspicious cyst on my lymph turned out to be caused by cancer on my tonsil. So. Many. Scans.
First up 2 surgeries at MedStar Georgetown.

Adult tonsillectomy recovery is ROUGH. Neck dissection is not fun. One week on broth only. So hungry! Would take 30 min to finish 1 bowl. Sip. Moan. Breath. Again. Ice is your best friend.

Good to be home after 2 nights in the hospital. Kudos to the nurses!! So kind! So caring! Forever in their debt. Home to cards, flowers, and so much broth!

Sleep was elusive for the first week as setting alarm every 3 hours for much-needed meds.

I’m committed to using this experience to educate other cancer patients via RT Answers & any way to help. Words matter. Images matter. I hope to be a better communicators.

Today is 2-weeks since surgery & I am eating & back online. Up next, RT at Inova Schar Cancer Institute with Gopal K. Bajaj leading the way & some Chemo. I am SAD to not go to ASTRO23 in my hometown of San Diego, but will be watching the action online.”
