Louise McKenna-Mayes Reflecting on London Global Cancer Week

Louise McKenna-Mayes, Co-Founder of TONI BOB AND LOU CIC, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Reflecting on London Global Cancer Week.

I had the privilege of attending London Global Cancer Week at the slightly chilli Terrace Pavilion at the Houses of Parliament, and it was an eye-opening experience.

My key takeaways were about taking action, fostering collaboration, and sharing patient stories, all of which align with our mission at TONIBOBANDLOU CIC to put the patient at the heart of the Book of Boobs experience. Just one of our unique project’s that helps to educate women using fine art photography of reconstructed breasts post surgery.

Ophira Ginsburg’s work on Women, Power, and Cancer was particularly inspiring. She emphasized how in Carolyn Taylor words ‘stories are the best way to understand and action equity in cancer care’. Additionally, Pat Price, Chair of Radiotherapy UK, highlighted the benefits of radiotherapy and their progress in shining a light on this crucial cause.

The Cancer Health Disparities Day program focused on:

  1. Raising Awareness: Increasing understanding of cancer health disparities and highlighting barriers faced by underserved groups.
  2. Educating and Informing: Providing the latest research and practical training for healthcare professionals.
  3. Fostering Collaboration: Bringing together stakeholders to share knowledge and develop new partnerships.
  4. Empowering Communities: Engaging in discussions about challenges in accessing quality cancer care and providing resources for advocacy.
  5. Developing Actionable Strategies: Creating specific plans to address disparities and disseminating recommendations to a wider audience.”
