Tracey O’Brien: As a paediatric oncologist and researcher, I know that despite the challenges, research is truly key to unlocking our understanding of cancer.

Tracey O’Brien, the Chief Cancer Officer and CEO of the Cancer Institute New South Wales, recently shared on LinkedIn:

“Every year, 350 families in NSW are told their child has cancer.

Every day, children’s cancer wards around the world are filled with moments of hope, and at times, utter devastation.

The impact of cancer doesn’t end during treatment. It is far-reaching and long lasting, with countless children growing up to feel the impact of cancer treatment well into adulthood.

Every September, we celebrate the resilience of children, as they face a life-altering cancer diagnosis. We also take a moment to acknowledge the families and community members who have wrapped their arms around their children and helped them through the most challenging moment of their young lives.

Sadly, September is also a time where we remember the children who have succumbed to an illness that still takes the lives of more children in NSW, than any other disease.

As a paediatric oncologist and researcher, I know that despite the challenges, research is truly key to unlocking our understanding of cancer.

At the Cancer Institute NSW, we recently invited Dr Richard Mitchell, Head of the Kids Cancer Centre at Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick to share his perspective on the vital role research and clinical trials play in children’s cancer.

As Childhood Cancer Awareness Month comes to a close, I encourage you to read his powerful words.”
