Steven Marshall: Attending an evening with The Institute of Cancer Research on research regarding Sarcoma

shared a post by Sally Williams, Senior Philanthropy Manager at The Institute of Cancer Research, on LinkedIn:

“I had a wonderful opportunity last night to attend an evening with The Institute of Cancer Research on research regarding Sarcoma. As well as highlighting the very personal journey for people affected by Sarcoma, I was amazed at how the importance of Data Science, Statistics, and AI has risen in cancer research. After a career of studying remote risks in finance, and more recently multi-dimensional predictive modelling – how much potential overlap in techniques and experience there could be.   .

Also after watching the rise of regulation in financial markets, how regulation can be challenging in the medical world. In the case of rare cancers the ability to carry out hundreds of placebo tests is not really viable. Either there are simply not enough cases to run tests, or morally most of these cancers will be fatal without some treatment – and early identification given the rarity is challenging. There needs to be open and honest discussions to ensure that patients needs are fully appreciated in this challenging area of providing statistical analysis on small data-sets. Particularly interesting was the ability to use AI to generate synthetic data sets for regulatory purposes.

Thank you to Andrea Napolitano and Paul Huang from the ICR for their detailed and fascinating insights.”

“An insightful evening listening to Dr. Paul Huang, Group Leader of the Molecular and Systems Oncology Group at The Institute of Cancer Research, and Dr. Andrea Napolitano, Medical Oncology Consultant from The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust. Dr. Huang and Dr. Napolitano spoke about their research into rare cancers with a focus on innovation in treatment of sarcoma. Incredible ‘bench to bedside’ research, helping to make the discoveries that defeat cancer.”
