Bente Mikkelsen: Each year, approximately 3,043 women in Zimbabwe are diagnosed with cervical cancer

Bente Mikkelsen, Director of NCD at WHO, shared on LinkedIn:

“Each year, approximately 3,043 women in Zimbabwe are diagnosed with cervical cancer while tragically, around 1,976 women lose their lives to this disease annually. During the final phase of our mission, we received a warm welcome from the Minister of Health and Child Care, Douglas Mombeshora and the team. They graciously accompanied our delegation throughout the visit, offering firsthand insights into the screening and treatment options available for cervical cancer across various levels of healthcare facilities, including those in hard-to-reach areas. It was amazing to hear the high HPV vaccine coverage in different places around the country when it was introduced. Witnessing the dedication of the health workers was inspiring, yet we couldn’t ignore the daily challenges they confront. They voiced the need for additional training, improved equipment, sufficient consumables, and a greater number of well-trained and adequately compensated community health workers nationwide.”
