“The belief that ‘tobacco pack-year’ is the most important factor in predicting health risks is based on historical assumptions that both intensity and duration are equally important. Research suggests this is not the case; ‘smoking duration’ should be considered more important than intensity in predicting risks of lung cancer, coronary artery disease, and severity of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.”
