Meet Samuel and his mother – CANCaRe Africa

“Please meet Samuel and his mother. Samuel is a seven years old boy from Boji Dirmaji, West Wollega in Ethiopia. His home is about 400km from Jimma University Medical Center (JUMC) where he is being treated for cancer. Samuel’s mother is a single mother and they live on daily labour to support her and her two children. After undergoing different investigations at JUMC, the mother was informed that Samuel has cancer in his abdomen. He was treated for about five months and completed his treatment successfully.

Starting from the first day of his illness and visiting the local health institutions until being treated for cancer at JUMC, the mother underwent catastrophic socioeconomical crises. She had to sell land and animals to afford the chemotherapy drugs. They did not go back home for the period of treatment.

Samuel’s mother expressed her gratitude to JUMC health care providers and others who have been by her side during the difficult time. She said it would have been impossible to stay in Jimma to complete the treatment of Samuel if there was no support provided by Tesfa Addis Parents Childhood Cancer Organization (TAPCCO), a local philanthropic NGO and the village community. Samuel and his mother went home and are now back for follow up. She is excited to hear that the follow up investigations bring good news.”
