Runcie C.W. Chidebe: So excited that my study won the Jerome Kaplan Outstanding Graduate Paper at the OAGE Conference

Runcie C.W. Chidebe, Executive Director at Project PINK BLUE, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“I am so excited that my study on ‘Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis of Older Women with Metastatic Breast Cancer‘ won the Dr. Jerome Kaplan Outstanding Graduate Paper at the 2024 Ohio Association of Gerontology and Education (OAGE) Conference at Kent State University, Canton, Ohio, USA. This is one of the most prestigious recognitions I recently received as an oncology researcher working in aging and cancer.

Dr. Jerome Kaplan was a major leader in gerontology at the local, state, national, and international levels for over 50 years. Dr. Kaplan was the founding president of the Ohio Network of Educational Consultants in the Field of Aging (ONECA) founded in 1975 (ONECA is now known as OAGE), president of the Gerontological Society of America, the president of the Ohio Research Council on Aging, and the editor of The Gerontologist.

My submission to Dr. Jerome Kaplan’s Outstanding Graduate Paper was a 32-page full manuscript. I spent months analyzing data and exploring a technique I had never used before. I was focused on delving into an area that is hugely neglected and uplifting the voices of older women living with metastatic breast cancer.

I am so excited that my name will now be crested and included in the league of winners of the Dr. Jerome Kaplan Outstanding Graduate Paper by OAGE, such as Usha Dhakal, Athena Koumoutzis, etc. Special thanks to our patients. I am so grateful to my advisor, Professor Jennifer Kinney, who played a critical role in helping me bring out the voices of the older women impacted by metastatic breast cancer patients. Thanks to ABC Global Alliance and Dr Fatima Cardoso who funded Project PINK BLUE’s Psychological Support Centre (PSC). Special thanks to my colleagues Kamryn Kasler, and Isha Karmacharya, who provided critical reviews of the first draft of this manuscript. Super thanks to my GA supervisor, Dr. Phyllis Cummins, Scripps Gerontology Center, and Miami University.

Last year, this paper was one of 95 presented at the Miami University Graduate Research Forum and won the top prize. Now, we need to submit it to a high-impact journal. Do you have any suggestions?

Super thanks to OHIO ASSOCIATION OF GERONTOLOGY AND EDUCATION.”
