ASCO recently announced their Advocate of the Year 2023 winner, stating:

“ASCO members have many chances to speak up for cancer patients on both the federal and state stages. These opportunities range from grassroots efforts and direct advocacy to more influential actions like engaging with policymakers and representing ASCO in official settings. Additionally, members can support ASCO’s political action committee. We’re proud to acknowledge the ASCO volunteers who demonstrated exceptional advocacy for cancer care in 2023.

Advocate of the Year: Jason Westin

Dr. Westin has been an essential advocate for cancer care professionals and their patients within ASCO. His involvement in various capacities, such as his congressional run in 2017, leadership within the ASCO Government Relations Committee over the past five years, and his role on the ASCO Association PAC Advisory Council, showcases his unwavering commitment to advocacy.

In 2023, Dr. Westin represented oncology professionals nationwide by testifying before the Senate Finance Committee regarding the ongoing drug shortages crisis. His efforts have established him as a trusted resource for lawmakers, effectively communicating how policies impact cancer patients in their respective areas.

Beyond congressional testimony, Dr. Westin has engaged with lawmakers through the ACT Network, participated in advocacy summits and federal agency meetings, utilized social media platforms actively, and contributed to the ASCO Association PAC.

These actions underscore his dedication to advancing cancer-related policies through advocacy, currently serving as the Past Chair of ASCO’s Government Relations Committee.“
