Sachin H. Jain on Case for Continuing to Improve Medicare Advantage

Sachin H. Jain, President and CEO of SCAN Group, shared a post on LinkedIn:

”For decades, the Medicare program was the gold standard of health coverage.

Then, something unexpected happened: it started to show its age.

The program—signed into law in 1965 during Lyndon Johnson’s presidency—has failed to keep up with the changing needs of society.

And so, while there is significant (appropriate) criticism of Medicare Advantage, traditional Medicare, too, needs a close look.

Today, in JAMA Internal Medicine, I argue the ‘Case for Continuing to Improve Medicare Advantage’ and decry our misplaced nostalgia for traditional Medicare.

Traditional Medicare puts too much cost burden on beneficiaries; is slow to innovate benefits; and continues to reward volume over value.

To be sure, Medicare Advantage needs major reforms as well. But critics of Medicare Advantage are holding on to a rose-colored view of traditional Medicare that simply is outdated.
