Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center – the 2nd Biennial Miami Precision Medicine Conference focused on unraveling the DNA code

An event by Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center on May 4-5,

sponsored by the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine,

focuses on unraveling the DNA code to conquer cancer


Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, part of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, will present the 2nd Biennial Miami Precision Medicine Conference to help advance next-generation precision oncology around the globe.

Moving precision medicine towards routine practice, experts seek to treat the right patient with the right treatment at the right time.

Experts will share the latest research and progress in precision oncology using targeted treatments and AI. It will also bring patients and advocates to the table to learn about clinical trials and partner with physicians to develop new strategies tailored to their specific needs.

“By increasing awareness and education about precision medicine, we are moving the needle towards ending cancer. Furthermore, by engaging with and including the international community, we are committed to leading precision oncology research and implementation globally,” said Dr. Carmen Calfa, conference program director and associate director of Community Outreach-Breast Cancer Program at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Keynote speaker Dr. Julie Gralow, chief medical officer and executive vice president of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, will speak about precision medicine at the global level on May 5. She recently received the Woman Oncologist of the Year award for her research on breast cancer and for promoting greater equity across cancer care.

A four-hour track on May 4 will feature patients and patient advocacy groups. The session will be moderated by Dr. Estelamari Rodriguez, associate director of community outreach and a thoracic medical oncologist at Sylvester.

Twenty-four experts from Sylvester will be presenting, in addition to faculty from Johns Hopkins University, University of California-San Francisco, University of Chicago and University of Texas.

Carmen Calfa is an associate professor of clinical medicine at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.

She serves as the Clinical Research Leader of the Breast Site Disease Group, the Medical Co-Director of the Cancer Survivorship and Translational Behavioral Sciences at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, and the Associate Director of Community Outreach – Plantation.

Dr Calfa is a breast medical oncologist at the Braman Family Breast Cancer Institute.

Estelamari (Estela) Rodriguez is the Associate Director of Community Outreach and Co-Lead Thoracic Site Disease Group of the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.

She is a board certified in medical oncology and hematology. In the past, she was the Medical Director Thoracic Oncology at Mount Sinai Medical Center Miami Beach. Dr. Rodriguez has a special interest in the early detection of lung cancer and increasing access to clinical trials.

She is a community leader and mentor to many women and minorities in medicine. Her passion is community engagement and empowering women to be advocates for their health and profession.

Julie Gralow is the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) and Executive Vice President of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO).

Previously, she was the Jill Bennett Endowed Professor of Breast Cancer at the University of Washington School of Medicine, Professor in the Clinical Research Division of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, as well as Director of Breast Medical Oncology at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance.

She is the founder of the Women’s Empowerment Cancer Advocacy Network (WE CAN). Dr. Gralow received the ASCO Humanitarian Award in 2018 for her work in empowering women cancer patients and survivors globally.
